Migration to springboot 4+

Hello,

I'm migrating my project from springboot 3.5.2 to 4.0.0-M1.

I'm integrated sba ... I guess there will be some changes necessary ... is there a plan to have also a "preview" of sba?

One example I face currently is the move of org.springframework.boot.autoconfigure.web.ServerProperties (3.5.x) to org.springframework.boot.web.server.autoconfigure.ServerProperties (4+) ... used inside de.codecentric.boot.admin.client.registration.ServletApplicationFactory.

Another one is the remove of "UriComponentsBuilder.fromHttpUrl"

For previous major updates we provided preview versions (for example https://github.com/codecentric/spring-boot-admin/releases/tag/3.0.0-M9), so I think we will do something similar for Spring Boot 4. At the moment, we have limited time to work on that, so we welcome your contributions. You can create a PR from your fork once you have a working version.

The team will meet tomorrow, we will discuss this topic there.

I will try to have a version with

spring-boot.version=4.0.0-M1
spring-cloud.version=2025.1.0-M1

as far as I see it's mostly a search and replace for "moved" classes etc.

Hi @erikpetzold any news from your meeting? I tried to document my findings in the MR.

In summary I faced the following "issues"

• feat(deps): upgrade to Spring Boot 4 #4558 (comment)
  • de.codecentric.boot.admin.client.config.SpringBootAdminClientRegistrationClientAutoConfigurationTest is failing ... but only locally ... no glue why
  • may my changes regarding the (new) dependencies for restclient / webclient are wrong
• ClientServletApplicationTest is not working too ... only locally?!
  • --spring.jackson.property-naming-strategy=SNAKE_CASE doesn't reach the created sba-client (jackson mapper) ?!
• de.codecentric.boot.admin.sample.SpringBootAdminServletApplicationTest is failing in github build
  • this is because jolokia-support-spring is also not ready yet for spring-boot 4
  • feat(deps): upgrade to Spring Boot 4 #4558 (comment)
  • not sure how to handle such third-party dependency-migration here in sba?
• I guess my eclipse formatter changed some files not as you want it ... "final" is automatically added everywhere to method parameters etc ... please give me a sign if this needs to be reverted

We did not yet have a detailed look at the changes itself.

• waiting for your results
• currently it's holiday season
• it is only the first milestone, there will be more and then release candidates etc... so there is still some time

but if you are at a point where you are blocked by the failing tests, we will try to support (again, holiday season, not sure when).

Of course other libraries need some time to adjust to the new version, so we do not expect them to be available from the beginning. Jolokia was even removed from Spring Boot Admin 3 for a while, because Spring Boot dropped support and it took some time until there was an alternative from jolokia itself. We hope everyone will be ready until final release.

Reformatting together with spring boot 4 migration sounds bad, because it will make the changes even bigger and harder to understand. Please try to revert that and maybe use a second IDE config for Spring Boot Admin.

Spring Boot 4 moved ServerProperties to a new package so imports must be updated manually
UriComponentsBuilder.fromHttpUrl was removed use fromUriString instead
SBA preview isn't announced yet but would make sense as 4.x stabilizes

Regarding import order: the Check should be coming from https://github.com/spring-io/spring-javaformat/blob/main/spring-javaformat/spring-javaformat-checkstyle/src/main/java/io/spring/javaformat/checkstyle/check/SpringImportOrderCheck.java

If you use intellij IDEA it should order correctly from the .editorconfig:

ij_java_imports_layout = |, java.**, |, jakarta.**, *, |, de.codecentric.boot.admin.**, |, $*
ij_java_layout_static_imports_separately = true

Otherwise you may have to setup the order yourself:

• java
• separator (blank line)
• jakarta
• other external imports
• separator (blank line)
• de.codecentric.boot.admin
• separator (blank line)
• static imports

(everything ordered alphabetically within the blocks)

no auto-fix with spring-javaformat:apply for imports
just make sure IntelliJ picks up the .editorconfig it’ll sort correctly

import order should be:

other (org com etc)

(blank).

static imports
alphabetical inside each block
static last

if not IntelliJ then manual setup needed

AHH! I found it ... in eclipse this import-rule is enough to fulfill the checkstyle rule:

=> the extra "jakarta" entry caused an extra group <=
