Some context here from a user of Proto and Renovate.

Proto is a toolchain manager. It use a TOML based file called .prototools located at the root of the project optimized for portability. Which also includes different config file versions based on the environment according to an explicit suffix (.prototools.production, for example).

Example:

node = "22.14.0"
pnpm = "10.3.0"

Proto supports semver and calver, with the respective version ranges for both of them. Including a lot of tools and sdks (Node.js, PNPM, Yarn, Deno, Bun, Rust, Go, Ruby, Moon, Python, UV, etc). This implies version validation can be done using meta-data from a lot of sources. It also need to be filtered according to the compatible tool names in Proto.

Most of the config file seems to be irrelevant for Renovate.
